Is your claim small-claims eligible? (Edmonton County Court and Family Court)
Claims of £10,000 or less normally allocate to the small claims track - the cheap, informal route described across this site. Claims above that go to fast track (£10,000–£25,000) or intermediate track (£25,000–£100,000), where the costs regime changes materially. How allocation works
The judge allocates by the claim's value and complexity, not by what you label it. Interest is included in the calculation; so is any counterclaim. Personal injury and housing-disrepair claims have special lower small claims limits. A claim that straddles the line can be sent either way - realistic valuation matters more than optimism.
Why under-claiming backfires
Splitting a £13,000 dispute into a £9,500 claim to reach the small claims track risks the court re-allocating and the fee schedule recalculating - and understating your loss in the particulars can preclude recovering it later. Claim what you can prove; the track system will place it.
