How to exhibit documents — Ipswich County Court and Family Hearing Centre small claims
Exhibits are the documents that prove your case: contracts, invoices, messages, photographs. For a Ipswich County Court and Family Hearing Centre claim, each exhibit must be marked, referenced in the right paragraph of your witness statement, and assembled into a paginated bundle the judge can navigate. PD 32 sets the mechanics; this page condenses them into a working method.
Marking and referencing exhibits
Mark each exhibit with your initials and a sequential number (AB/1, AB/2...). In the witness statement, reference it in the paragraph where it matters - 'the contract is exhibited at AB/1' - and identify the exhibit on its own first page. Keep exhibits in the order they are referenced, never in date order of their own.
Building the bundle the judge can use
Number every page of the bundle continuously, add a front index listing each exhibit with its page range, and cross-check every in-text reference against the index. A bundle with a correct index reads as credible; a pile of loose attachments reads as chaos - and messy bundles are a documented reason judges discount evidence.
Checklist
- Every exhibit marked with initials + number (AB/1)
- In-text reference in the relevant paragraph
- Continuous page numbering across the whole bundle
- Front index: exhibit number, description, page range
- Cross-check: every reference in the statement exists in the index
